Summer Shark Viewing: Plenty Of Sharks Now In Joubertsdam, Mossel Bay

MOSSEL BAY - Shark viewers are reporting a large number of sharks in Joubertsdam, Mossel Bay, the shallows area where the Great Whites move during the summer season.

"Plenty of familiar faces are around with several of last month's sharks still in the bay," says Oliver Jewell of the Marine Dynamics shark viewing outfit. "Temperatures have been pushing towards the 30°C mark we're looking forward to seeing some nice summer weather later in November. There are still several large sharks in the area, the largest being around 3.5m!"

According to Jewell the "sharks of the month" are undoubtedly two individuals now called "Woundy" and "Jill". Woundy, a 2.8m female with a deep wound on the left side of her tail, between the second dorsal fin and the caudal, was first seen in Mossel Bay in February of 2009 where both the large wound and her feisty temperament made her the most notorious shark in the area.

"Bait handlers beware! She's now in Joubertsdam and will certainly keep you on your toes!" says Jewell.

"Jill", a large and dark female (about 3.3m in length) was first sighted in September 2007. While wowing their clients with a dominating display of power and grace Marine Dynamics resident marine biologist Alison Towner asked the guests to name her. One of them propsed that the graceful animal be called after his ex-wife Jill.

"Betty" was also a welcome sight this summer. First seen in 2007 and named because of a large parasitic wound underneath her right eye, she is currently around 3.2m in length and the wound appears smaller with each return she makes to the area.

The Southern Right whales are reportedly also in good form, and Jewell says his shark viewing groups have regularly encountered a white calf accompanied by its mother. On another occasion they had a mother whale tail slapping repeatedly while her calf breached.

More shark viewing and whale watching information is available at Marine Dynamics

Paarl 'Taal' Monument

Prominently situated on Paarl Mountain, to the west of the town center (reached by way of Jan Philips Mountain Drive), is the 57m/187ft high Taal Monument. The design of the monument, which was inaugurated in 1975, was the work of the architect Jan van Wyk and the writers C. J. Langenhoven and N. P. van Wyk Louw. It symbolizes the contributions made by Africa, the Netherlands and Britain to the development of the Afrikaans language. From the monument there are fine panoramic views.

Cape traditional cuisine by Cass Abrahams

I looked at South Africa through a special regional looking glass, and saw…..

A kontrei is a limited geographical area having distinct characteristics because of its natural and cultural integrity and dynamics.

A Place is a chip of a kontrei

A kontrei is named by local people irrespective of political boundaries. Sometimes different names exist for the same kontrei and it is fairly common for people expressing themselves as part of a smaller kontrei within a bigger one.

By using Kontrei glasses, the visitor can see the land better in an “as is” format.

The Kontrei Traveller Portfolio (KTP) offers the visitor a selection of hosts, each from a different kontrei. The host is someone calling his/her place in a particular kontrei, MY home. They are best equipped to introduce the visitor to an authentic experience of their place and kontrei.

The KTP member as part of the local community, runs a tourism business in and through his/her kontrei– MY business. All these KTP members are a special people because they produce their tourism products in a sustainable way.

YOU, the visitor – the sustainable consumer – is invited to buy into these products for a quality travel experience.

Travelling as A Sense of Place experience in: Paarl

Zomerlust Gastehuis in Paarl in the Boland kontrei is where I started with the heritage site of the Zomerlust Farm and Manor house in the historic center of Paarl.

The spacious property in the center of town is where you can relive the history of three generations of the Jacob Isaac de Villiers bloodline, do a guided Paarl Walkabout and explore the natural fynbos and cultural heritage of the Afrikaans language and the wine and brandy culture. Zomerlust Gastehuis is the only place where you can buy the J I de Villiers family product, Paarl Rock, brandy. We offer the cellar and products of a few Paarl Garagiste winemakers, Cape traditional cuisine by Cass Abrahams and selected wines from the region to go with the food.

An authentic, quality experience awaits you at Zomerlust Gastehuis. Read More... http://www.kontrei.co.za/zomerlust-paarl.php

Keurbosfontein and Bakkrans

Johan van der Westhuizen has been our financial advisor for more than 20 years via the companies he has been attached to. He was one of the founder members of PSG before his retirement in 2007.

He was instrumental in developing the concepts of converting the private dwelling of Zomerlust into Zomerlust Gastehuis because we share the same views on sustainability in business.

I was therefore non officially, but seriously, involved in the conseptualisation of Keurbosfontein and Bakkrans in their conversion to tourism destinations.

Today Keurbosfontein and Bakkrans can be enjoyed by those who seek the value of simplicity within the environment of safety and comfort without losing the intimate contact with Cederberg nature and the history of the San and the white farmers.

If you want to stay on a farm yard , Please see Keurbosfontein at http://www.kontrei.co.za/keurbosfontein-1.php

Kontrei - definition and background

1.1Eco tourism (Read : kontrei tourism)

Up to now the natural science’s expressions such as ecosystem and ecology, has influenced the economic and social domain of tourism, giving birth to the idea and practice of eco tourism. The general meaning and application is that of a type of tourism being nature based.

Following the paradigm of understanding our earth, we now use eco tourism as an approach to understand and manage our tourism business.

“Eco” is interpreted and applied according to the original Greek word, “oikos”, meaning “home”. “Eco” therefore means and refers to the total environment – natural and cultural - of the place/area which someone calls home. This extension of the currently used meaning of “eco”, opens a window of improving our understanding of place/region because of incorporating the cultural part of a particular “ECO” and its interrelationship with nature. It therefore creates an opportunity for value added, enlightening experiences for the visitor(tourist) to a particular place/region.

As far as I know, the word, kontrei, in my language came due to the influence from French – contrée - and Dutch – kontrei – both meaning region. It referred to a political region in terms of a municipality or province. The word kontrei , is alive in my language but it is freed of the political context and is used in its geographical context. It means and refers to any limited, geographical area with a distinct character due to its natural and/or cultural integrity.

In the rural areas of my country these regions have names. These names for specific geographical areas may include town areas and can stretch into or across district and provincial areas. Bidouw, Boland, Bo-Karoo, Camdebo, Cederberg, Hantam, Klein-Karoo, Namaqualand, Roggeveld, Sandveld and West Coast are typical examples.
But even in the Cape Town urban area for example, Bo-Kaap, District Six, Constantia and Sea Point, each with distinct and diverse cultural integrity, makes for separate kontreis.

Used in the tourism context , kontrei, is an explicit and descriptive word. If it is applied where a visitor comes to my place/area; to my home; to my KONTREI, one can almost feel the potent quality of visitor’s sense of place experience.

Using kontrei instead of eco refers to a qualitative difference in experience. If it is only an “eco” tourism experience – a nature based experience – that awaits the visitor, a sure myopic tourist experience will be the result.

When the extended eco- kontrei- is now used in the approach to tourism, it is like putting on special KONTREI glasses to view one’s country and our earth. This view then explodes with massive and impressive diversities. An enormous potential wealth of enlightening experiences awaits the visitor to these diverse places and regions.

In order for the integrity of the land – South Africa - to be seen better by the visitor, one needs to view the land using the special set of “Kontrei” glasses.

Using the Kontrei glasses the land is viewed in terms of a diversity of regions, each with its distinct natural and then to be completed by cultural, characteristics. It refers to the synthetic relationship between geography and demography. The sensible, dynamic but authentic piece of earth thus born out of this relationship is known in the Afrikaans language as a “Kontrei”

Look at South Africa through your KONTREI (Region) glasses and let the land introduce itself in terms of its various, different regions. A massive diversity comes to the fore.

Introducing “Kontrei” and “place”
Where:
A Kontrei(Region) is any limited geographic area with specific characteristics due to its natural and cultural integrity and dynamics

A Place is a chip of a kontrei

Now South Africa speaks kontrei language in terms of the diversity of regions with names like :
The Fairest Cape, Transkei,
Green Midlands, Boland
The Lowveld, West Coast
Highveld, Namaqualand,
Riemland, Klein Karoo
Bushmanland Camdeboo

To experience the diversity, product owners are selected from places in a particular Kontrei where their hosting, accommodation in terms of buildings and interior and attractions offered, most probably will give the visitor an authentic, enlightening experience of that Kontrei.

Practicing Sustainability - The 4C Approach

The 4C model represents the following stakeholders

- C1 Conservation: Responsible natural and cultural environmental resource
management of my place/kontrei
- C2 Community: Optimal, fair host community procurement
- C3 Customer: Visitor enlightenment by sense of place experience
- C4 Company: Sustainable, economic, entrepreneurial enterprise.

When a tourist enterprise aims to be sustainable(C4), it can come about if at first care is taken of the environment(C1) where the business is located, secondly the local host community be involved(C2) and customers be satisfied(C3)

When this dedication is practically managed as a tourist business in and through your place and kontrei, the overlapping effect of the 4 C’s will establish a contribution to sustainability.

The following demonstrates the contribution – the overlapping black circle - to adding value to sustainability when a tourist enterprise is managed by objectives over time according to the 4C Approach.

“Conservation is the best way for using our earth”

The entrepreneur taking responsibility for sustainability operates the tourism company, C4, in and through the use of the environmental resources of the place and kontrei, C1, in a conservation mode using clean technology. The future drift is upwards.

At the same time the same entrepreneur starts managing the tourism company, C4, and involves the host community, C2, optimally and fairly. The managements starts by doing the right things and people involved learn to improve performance by managing by objectives. The future drift is to the right.

The resultant effect of both the future drifts is towards the upper right quadrant – always closer to the target market, C3. Involving the customer will pay dividends for the business in future because this is where we have defined Quality as: serving the customer’s need and expectations in a cost effective way..

Conservation is the best way for using our earth

Thus the market is the “no more mass tourism” market where the travellers go slow and spend more time on value added experiences – natural and cultural -in one or two kontreis, hosted and guided by local charm.

THE PURPOSE –

Is to experience South and Southern Africa via its diversity of regions.

The natural and cultural assets of a kontrei is packaged to be consumed in an interactive and participated way

Selected hosts from the various regions will host and guide the guest in an enlightening way.

All these accommodations, tours and attractions are produced in a sustainable way – transparent to the sustainable consumer.

The itineraries are designed to Go Slow and Experience More. Stay at least 2 nights per destination

Our formal mission is :

We market and manage a sustainable travel experience for a visitor to a natural and/or cultural environment, whereby through interaction and participation the visitor will be enlightened. All Tourism businesses involved, should use environmental resources in a sustainable way resulting in economic viable enterprises with economic benefits to the host community.

Cape Flowers and Southern right whale

Namaqualand flower tours focus on spring, as the flower calendar of Namakwaland is based on the occurence of winter rainfall on this western, arid side of South Africa.

Gansbaai, the Great White Shark Capital of the world, is also the Big Two Town. This is the only place where it is possible to see both the Southern Right Whale and the Great White Shark on the same day.
The Southern Right Whale come to the nearby calm bays every year to calve and nurse their young or to mate.
